A case for doing B- work

Last weekend I had an amazing trip with most of my girl cousins. We've been planning it since pre-COVID and it finally happened. It was the most wonderful, perfect time. We laughed and ate great food and enjoyed the sunny Charleston weather. We played a million games and laughed some more.

And then, just like that, back to real life. Two sick kids, lots of work to do, and we are leaving for a family Thanksgiving trip on Thursday night. On that trip, we will celebrate both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I need to finish (well, start, and also finish) Christmas gift shopping before then.

I'd love to get everything done, including wrapping each gift with pretty wrapping and a bow. When I have time, I love to do A+ work. But this isn't the week for that. I will do A+ work on taking care of my sick kids, and seeing my clients.

The rest of this week calls for B- work. That means heating up frozen meals for dinner, buying cute gift bags when I'm out shopping so I don't have to wrap, asking for help from my parents for rides, living in a semi-picked up house and hitting the gym a couple times.

(And that's all in addition to what I already have in place, which is a laundry service to wash and fold the clothes, a babysitter to drive home from school, grocery delivery, and a meal subscription.)

Sometimes, focusing on doing things perfectly actually makes everything worse. It encourages procrastination. It creates overwhelm. It's satisfying to put forth your best effort and do great work. BUT NOT ON EVERYTHING!

Where in your life could you do some B- work this week?
