The Sunshine Expressway
Do you ever keep doing the same thing over and over, even though it doesn't make you feel good? In an attempt to keep us "safe," our brain likes to keep us in familiar misery instead of making a change.
Imagine that when you take your kids to school, you take the same route every morning. It's side roads with lots of turns, traffic, and no cell service. And it's always raining. It leaves you feeling annoyed every single day. But, you know the path down Misery Road, so you keep taking it. In fact, it's the same Misery Road your mom drove to take you to school. All of your mom friends commiserate about how much they hate Misery Road, but yet you all press on.
You notice another mom who lives near you is always in a great mood when she arrives at school drop off. She clues you in to new way to get to school, the Sunshine Expressway. It has zero traffic, and even has a Starbucks with a drive thru that never has a wait. And of course it's always sunny!
You doubt this exists, but decide to give it a try. It doesn't feel amazing right away, because it's new and you have to pay attention. You don't even notice the Starbucks until the 3rd day. But after a week, you too are cruising down the Sunshine Expressway, listening to streaming music and drinking a latte, and wondering why everyone else is still on Misery Road.
The key to shifting to Sunshine Expressway is to figure out what is keeping you on Misery Road in the first place.
It's likely an old story in your mind, an unconscious thought. You may have a thought that taking kids to school should be hard. Maybe your Mom and Grandmother taught you their rules for school drop off. Or maybe it's peer pressure from your friends that you didn't even notice. Perhaps suffering through Misery Road makes you feel needed and important.
Whatever it is, it's just a thought, and it can be excavated and changed. All of the power is within you.
