Are you tired, buffering or controlling?
When my clients come to me for coaching, it’s because they are overwhelmed with something, or many things.
It could be a frustrating relationship with a boss, spouse, mother-in-law, or child.
It could be the constant stress of trying to keep up with being a mom, wife, boss and daughter.
It could be an ever-present feeling that they should be grateful for their life, but they aren’t happy for reasons they can’t explain.
Everyone deals with their stress and overwhelm in different ways. But based on my experience, people usually fall into one of these categories.
1. Fatigued Fran
Fran is so tired. So very tired. Fran wants to hide under the covers and sleep for a month. Often Fran has physical symptoms like an aching back or headaches. Fran’s body is trying to tell her something. The exhaustion is permanent and she is waiting for “this” to pass.
2. Buffering Betty
Betty will do anything to avoid sitting quietly with her own thoughts. In order to not think about what’s really bothering her, Betty uses any number of buffers to avoid it instead. She might over drink, over eat, or shop mindlessly. She might also work non-stop, staying constantly busy. She may spend hours looking at social media. Anything to avoid her thoughts.
3. Controlling Cathy
Cathy’s approach to dealing with overwhelm and the feeling of life being beyond her control is to control as much as she possibly can. Cathy is a controlling spouse and mother, attempting to plan everyone else’s everything. This means Cathy nags a lot and is often commenting on what others “should be” doing.

PS Seriously, I want to know if you are a 1, 2, or 3. I’m a bit of all of them, but #2 is my go to.
