When you have a big, messy problem

In life, there are small, manageable problems like "my garage door doesn't open when I press the button". In that case, you can figure out what to do. (Call someone else to fix it, if you're like me!)

There are medium problems, like "my child is struggling in math", where the answer isn't exactly known, but you can figure out the steps to take. You ask your child what the issue seems to be, help them with homework, call the teacher.

Then there are the BIG messy problems, like "I am behind on everything and my life is overwhelming". In that case, the solution is bigger, too. When faced with big messy problems, we tend to do 2 things:

1. Band-Aid: Do something that helps the problem, but only temporarily. For example, you might:

📩stay up until midnight to answer all of your work emails

🧺spend all weekend cleaning up the house and doing laundry.

2. Buffer: Do something that doesn't solve the problem at all, but helps you temporarily avoid it. For example, you might:

🍷drink wine

🍫 eat chocolate

The bad news is, band-aids and buffers don't solve big messy problems. The good news is, big messy problems CAN be solved. The process is pretty straight forward.

1️⃣Pause and break the problem down. List out the smaller problems and prioritize them.

2️⃣Review what's out of your control. Create new thoughts and actions based on what you can control.

3️⃣Start executing on your plans.

Rinse and repeat until it's resolved.

If you've got a big messy problem on your hands, set up a free session. We will look at the problem, break it down, and prioritize the issues. I'll outline the steps you'll take to solve it. Then you can decide if coaching is right for you. No pressure and no obligation.

PS This was written while I was eating chocolate covered gummy bears. I've got nothing against chocolate. Or wine. Or netflix. And I love online shopping. It's just important to know they don't SOLVE anything.
