People Are Good

I just got back from an amazing trip to Panama and Colombia with my Dad. We had the best experience, a lot of it due to people being good.

When we went to a museum that ended up being closed, the Uber driver didn’t leave us there in the rain. She talked to the museum staff when our Spanish failed us and found out when it would be open. She recommended other places we could go instead and took us there.

When monkeys came on our boat in the rainforest (!!!), a stranger in another boat took a video, and texted it to me. More times than I could count, strangers helped us with directions, or recommendations on what food to order, or just smiled and welcomed us. Strangers sitting next to us brought us a slice of birthday cake after we wished them a happy birthday.

On the way home, I left my iPad on the plane. Apparently the cleaning staff found it, and returned it to security. Our plane landed so late that the lost and found was closed, so the security guard took it home and asked her 15 year old son to figure out who it belonged to, and he did. They returned it.

People are good.

When you believe a thought like “people are good”, your brain looks for evidence that it’s true. When you have evidence that people are good, you notice more people being good. It’s a cycle, but the good kind.

We always get more of what we focus on. If we had focused on the taxi driver who overcharged us, we might have believed a thought like “people are out to get us” and then would have seen evidence for that instead. We wouldn’t have been open to their kindness or recommendations. It could have been a completely different trip.

What thought do you want to believe today? I’m sticking with “People are good”.

PS Thank you to everyone who voted for the next masterclass topic last week. The winner was “How to stop negative self talk” (just barely!! How to stop feeling overwhelmed was a close second). Congratulations to Dana C who won the Starbucks gift card and coaching session! Registration will be open soon, I’ll keep you posted.

PPS If you want to stop focusing on negative thoughts, I can help. The first step is to set up a discovery session with me! DM me if you want to chat.
