Sunrises, Chicken Nugget Crumbs, & Choosing Peace

Last week, the Handsome Man Friend and I were on vacation at a fabulous resort in Mexico. One morning we got up to watch the sunrise (we never do this, we sleep in on vacation, I don’t know how this happened). I was taking in all of the details - the perfect warm breeze, the salty humid smell, my toes in the white sand, and a beautiful sunrise full of pink and orange, rising up over the ocean while birds flew in what seemed like a choreographed dance.

It is so easy to feel peaceful and content in a situation like that. But what about when you get home to a messy kitchen or have to go back to a job you hate, or take care of sick kids, again?

There are a few options. Most obvious, just hop right back on the plane and go back to Mexico. If you can’t swing that one, try this instead: Remember that your feelings are always created by your own thoughts.

During the sunrise I was thinking “how lucky am I to be here for a moment such as this” and that made me feel content and peaceful.

You can think thoughts on purpose to improve your mood anywhere, anytime.

Let’s get back to that messy kitchen situation. My default thought would probably be, “Of course the kitchen is a mess and I have to clean it up!” . . . but what if I instead think, on purpose, “How lucky am I to be here for a moment such as this!”.

I immediately think how lucky I am to have my kids. I can’t even imagine all of the situations that came together for them to be adopted by us. I am so lucky to provide them with a safe and loving home where they have the opportunity to eat the food that I am able to buy. I can smile at the pink spoon on the counter that I know is my daughter’s favorite, and chuckle at the fact that my son cannot make chicken nuggets in the air fryer without getting 10,000 crumbs all over the counter and floor, and smile despite myself.

It not might be a full “sunrise in Mexico” moment but it sure feels better than feeling angry and resentful. Here’s to sunrises, chicken nugget crumbs, and changing our thoughts.

TINY PLEASURES: HOMEMADE LATTES

One small thing bringing me joy lately? Making lattes at home. There’s something about the process—steaming the milk, frothing it just right, and taking that first warm sip—that feels like a little luxury in my day.

MOOD SHIFTER

Spending even a little time on Sunday to set yourself up for a smooth(er) week can have a huge impact on your mood.

Today, what if you put away all of your clean laundry?

Week long impact: No piles creating clutter, everyone knows where their clothes are, no more getting dressed from the clean laundry basket and accidentally unfolding the already clean and folded laundry (I’m looking at you, my children!).

Pro Tip: Use a laundry service and the putting away is the only part you/your family will have to do at all!

Have a great week!
